MODULE BRIEF

LECTURES

Lecture 1 - INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY & IMAGING

  • Why you need to learn Photoshop?
Photoshop is a great experience and provides many unique tools that can help us unleash our imagination.

1. Express your creativity

Photoshop has many functions, which can make us fully realize our own abilities. What allowed me to find a new way was that I had a better layout.

2. Create graphic design

Photoshop can also create website format, I can use this software to make business cards, greeting cards, posters, etc... It can help me a lot.

3. Restoration of old images

Photoshop can restore old photos and bring back happy memories.

4. Integrate graphics with text artistically

Photoshop has the ability to blend and match images with information for adaptive, embossed, bevel and descending dark results. Using these features I can make the information more beautiful.

5. Make use of brushes

Photoshop has thousands of years of brush types, each with a different impact.

6. Change photo color

Photoshop can change pictures into different colors and add special effects to photos.

7. Rectify mistakes in photographs

Photoshop can turn dark, red eye, low light, etc., some photos that don't look good into beautiful.

Lecture 2 - INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSITION

  • Introduction to Basic Composition
  1. Focal Point
  2. Scale & Hierarchy
  3. Balance the Elements
  4. White space
(Fig.2)
  • Rule of Thirds
The rule of thirds means that the image is divided into three parts with two horizontal and two vertical lines.
(Fig.2.1)
There are nine parts in this imaginary grid, with four points of intersection.

When the subject of the picture is placed on the intersection point, the image will be more natural. The horizon is best placed on the top horizontal line or the bottom horizontal line.

The Rule of Thirds is a way to:
  • Use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye.
  • Creatively use negative space.
  • Create conversation between the subject and background.
(Video.2)

(Video.2.1)

  • Golden Ratio
The Golden ratio is a mathematical ratio that, when used in design, can form an organic and natural composition.

The golden ratio in design is reduced to aesthetics, which comes from harmony and proportional creation.

The golden ratio can be used to determine layout dimensions by adjusting the dimensions to 1:1.618 to apply the golden ratio.

Lecture 3 - Introduction to Photoshop 2

  • Lasso Tool
The Lasso Tool allow you to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document.
When you click on the Lasso Tool from the Toolbar, you will see three different tool options:

-Lasso
-Polygonal Lasso
-Magnetic Lasso
(Fig.3)

The lasso tool is similar to a pencil and has a better flow.

(Video.3)

  • Pen Tool
When it comes to actually creating a path from scratch, the pen tool is the most common option.

The pen tool is the way that you add these points and the way you drag the tool as you create the points determines how  they will look.

The fewer points, the smoother a path will be.

  • Layering
Layers are different images stacked on top of each other.
The advantage of using layers is that you can make non-destructive edits to the original.

(Video.3.3)

Lecture 4 - Introduction to Photoshop 3(Adjustment Layer & Filters)

  • Adjustment Layer
The Adjustment Layers in Photoshop are a group of a super useful,  non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its  pixels.

1. Brightness / Contrast
Brightness / Contrast makes adjustments to the tonal range of your image.

2. Level
Levels modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, midtones, and highlights.

3. Curves
Curves let you adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image,  and is the most powerful and precise tool for editing the tones in an image.

4. Exposure
Exposure lets you adjust exposure levels with three sliders: Exposure, Offset and Gamma.

5. Selective Color
The Selective Color adjustment layer selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other  primary colors in your image.
  • Filters
Using filters to edit photos is an essential element of Adobe’s graphics editor.
There are filters to change colour, add blur or create completely new image effects.

(Video.4)

Lecture 5 - DOUBLE EXPOSURE
  • Double Exposure Photography
Double exposure photography means combining multiple images. It is usually characterized by silhouettes.

1. Using the Tilt-Shift Effect
It can turn photos into works of art
How to use : go to Filter > Blur Gallery > Tilt-Shift.
(Fig.5)

2. Create fake reflection
Create double exposure with separate window photos. Helps to add interesting textures to multiple exposure photography.
(Fig.5.1)

3. Experiment with simple portraits and details textured
It can combine simple photos with complex ones, and it can also save discarded simple photos.
(Fig.5.2)
4. Convert your results to Black & White
A lack of color will enhance the mood of your double-exposure image.
(Fig.5.3)

5. Work with silhouette
Double exposure with only contours gives a unique effect.
(Fig.5.4)

6. Pick two random photo
Random processes also make sense, lead to greater creativity, and the creative process is fun.
(Fig.5.5)

7. Make simple objects look fascinating
Taking pictures of common objects to make them look different can enhance the imagination.
(Fig.5.6)

8. Use Shadow
Any type of silhouette is ideal for double exposure photography. I need to take more shadow photos and make them beautiful.
(Fig.5.7)
  • Blend Modes
Using mixed modes is an experimental process that requires trying different modes and filling in the opacity until you get the desired result.
(Fig.5.8)

Here’s a quick guide:

  1. Select the Layer 1 (Fire) to be on top of the Background (Musicians)
  2. Go to the Blending Modes option
  3. Select “Screen”
  4. As a result, all of the pixels on the fire will be selected as Screen blending mode.
Lecture 6 - POSTER DESIGN

The basic principles of design are: emphasis, balance and alignment, contrast, repetition, proportion, movement and white space.

Fig.6

The 7 principles of poster design :

1. EMPHASIS

Designers must follow design principles in order to create compositions that are both effective and attractive.

2. Balance and alignment

3. CONTRAST

The contrast is off the page. Contrast creates space and difference between your design elements.

4. REPETITION

Repetition can unify and strengthen the design.

5. PROPORTION

Proportion is the visual size and weight of the elements in a composition, and their relationship to each other.

6. MOVEMENT

Movement is the element that controls the composition. Movement creates the story or narrative of the work.

7. WHITE SPACE

White space or negative white space is the only space dedicated to dealing with no additions. Giving your composition more space can go from mediocrity to success.

TASK

Week 1 : Mr.Fauzi asked us to find three designs we liked on pinterest and explain why.

  • Design 1

This visual representation is characterized by a nuanced gray gradient, and the amalgamation of typography and pattern is exemplary, rendering it aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to the eye. Moreover, the thematic clarity is pronounced, enabling the observer to discern the intended message with ease.

  • Design 2

The upper portion of the imagery is dominated by an orange hue, while the lower segment is characterized by a blue palette, with a seamless transition occurring in the middle. Moreover, the typography employed is aesthetically pleasing, and the amalgamation of the font style with the water's reflection yields a visually stunning effect.

  • Design 3

The visual composition is characterized by a monochromatic palette of gray and white, with a striking red accent at the center that serves as a focal point, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal. The color juxtaposition is particularly harmonious, creating an aesthetically pleasing and comforting visual experience. Additionally, the representation of four planets of varying sizes is executed with meticulous attention to scale and proportion, ensuring a well-balanced and coordinated composition.

Week 2 :This week Mr.Fauzi began to teach us to make clip art. He asked us to arrange the cut images into three styles, one by one to help us see if we placed them properly, and he would patiently help me adjust them.

(collage.1)

(collage.2)

(collage.3)

Week 3 : This week we are still making clip art. Mr.Fauzi looked at three of my collages and helped me modify them. There is my finished product.
(The final collage)

Week 4 :I made three collages from what Mr.Fauzi taught me in class.

(collage.1)

(collage.2)

(collage.3)

Week 5 : I took one of the best collages I ever made and made a color palette to unify the colors and make it look more harmonious.

(Add filters to the collage)

PRACTICAL :

Mr.Fauzi has sent us a ppt, in which the following contents are explained:

  1. Quick Selection Tool

  2. Layer Mask

  3. Filters

  4. Color Correction

I followed the video tutorial step by step.

Take the figure off first.

Adjust the figure to the right size.

Use adjustments to integrate the character into the picture.

Use the brush tool to shadow the character. Then copy the character and add the reflection. Use the pen tool to cut out the excess.

Finally adjust the color of the reflection and I am done.

EXERCISE 1:

Today in class, Mr.Fauzi taught us how to color the characters.

This is the picture Mr.Fauzi gave us :

Import the image and create a new layer and name it "face".

Select the Brush Tool and resize it.

Pick a color you like and paint over your face with a brush.

Create a new layer and paint out the hair.

Apply the same method to the mouth, eyes, clothes.

Select the wall with the lasso tool.

A little color adjustment is my final result :

EXERCISE 2:

This is a black and white photo, I followed the video tutorial to adjust the color.

First, use the hair and skin color materials given by Mr.Fauzi  to extract the color.

Use the Quick Selection tool to select the hair section and color it.

Do the same for clothes, mouth, teeth and earrings.

This is my final result :

FEEDBACK

Week 1 : In the first class, Mr.Fauzi  explained the general content of this course and our learning direction, and asked us to download the adob software, which we will need to use frequently in the future. He also told us to prepare magazines, scissors, glue, etc... For the next class.

Week 2 : In the second class, Mr.Fauzi explained the collage art and told us that some white space should be left when flat pasting, so as to reflect the sense of breathing and make the picture more beautiful and harmonious. It also teaches us how to compose, need to have a sense of hierarchy, big and small, in order to have a clear theme.

Week 3 :This week, Mr.Fauzi asked us to collage the content cut out from the last class on the paper and gave us one-to-one instruction. Let's highlight the theme, all objects should go in the same direction, maybe from left to right, maybe from top to bottom, immediately catch someone's eye. Space between objects is appropriate. The sense of breath is very important. It helps me a lot.

Week 4 :In the fourth lesson, Mr.Fauzi used the form of online lesson, so that we can see how to use ps more intuitively. Mr.Fauzi taught us to make collages with photoshop.

Week 5 :This week, Mr.Fauzi still adopted the online form in class. He first selected our best works for us and then started the class. In this class, I learned how to use ps to color pictures. I unified the colors in the picture and now it looks more coordinated.

Week 6 :This week's class is still in the form of online class, Mr.Fauzi first commented on our homework last week, and then began the class, the content of this class he talked about is how to color black and white photos.

'The Show'Mural Competition

On October 6, I participated in the design competition of the school. The content of our group painting was world peace. On the far left were the famous buildings of many countries, in the middle were the national flags of many countries, on the right was a rainbow representing friendship, and the theme object was a dove representing peace.
