Illustration and Visual Narrative

MODULE BRIEF

LECTURE

Lecture 1-Character Design Basics

The most impressive animated characters are stylized designs, and they all have the following in common:

  • Iconic:It's instantly recognizable.
  • Simplicity:Able to digest and understand the purpose of the character easily.
  • Unique:It's not just memorable, it has an impact on the audience.

  1. A character starts out as a combination of different shapes.
  2. Colors also play an important role in creating characters, and different colors can express different emotions.
  3. An impressive character requires the use of exaggerated colors and strong contrasting visual elements.

(Fig.1)

Lecture 2-Chiaroscuro

Chiaroscuro plays an important role in creating characters.

  1. Clear tonal contrast in a painting can suggest three-dimensional volume and shape.
  2. Light and dark contrast can exaggerate the importance of the subject and thus increase the tension of the drama.

(Fig.2)

Chiaroscuro is used in visual storytelling because it is an excellent lighting option for distinguishing between positive and negative Spaces.

  • Positve Space:Refers to subject matter or object of interest in a visual.
  • Negative Space:Refers to the filled space or background that surround subject matter or object of interest in visual.

(Fig.2.1)
  • Increase Dramatic Tension:Give thrilling emotional depth to the look and feel of the scene.
  • Create Sensational Effect:Helps to elevate the fantasy point of view to emphasize the narrative.
  • Attract Attention:Helps to elevate the fantasy point of view to emphasize the narrative.
  • Make Tasteful Composition:The play of negative space versus positive space creates an attractive scenario.

Lecture 3-Composition Theory 1 || Visual Types And Shots

Composition in design simply means the arrangement of the elements in your visual.

Even in the most subtle way, use the lens to consciously arrange the focus of the scene.

Basic Composition Visual Rules:

  • Visual Narrative:The visuals in the scene complement every aspect of the narrative.
  • Visual Flow:The scene has a clear visual flow that guides the viewer's eye.
  • Visual Balance:Lay out visuals to balance composition in the scene.
  • Visual Hierarchy:The visual effects are arranged in such a way that leads the viewer's eye first to specific details.

(Fig.3)

Lecture 4-Composition Theory 2 || Perspective

Your vision should capture these rules:
  • one-point perspective
  • two-point perspective
  • three-point perspective
  • isometric grid

(Fig.4)

one-point perspective : Draw the object from a point on the horizon.

(Fig.4.1)

two-point perspective : There are vanishing points on either side of the horizon, and objects and buildings in the scene are attracted to these two vanishing points.

(Fig.4.2)

three-point perspective : Usually consists of a two-point perspective, but another vanishing point is added high above or below the horizon.

(Fig.4.3)

isometric grid : For creating a detailed concept of a single building, it is more beneficial to use a simple isometric view.

(Fig.4.4)

Example:

Las Meninas

Lecture 5-Composition Theory 3 || Fore,Mid And Background

Composition is important. There are three elements:
  1. foreground (close to the viewer)
  2. middle-ground
  3. background (far away)
(Fig.5)

Arrange the subject matter in the foreground.

(Fig.5.1)

Put the focus in the middle-ground.

(Fig.5.2)

Or put it on the farthest field of view as a background.

Example:

TASK

Week 1 :Mr.Hafiz let us try 'The Bezier Game'.

(Fig.'The Bezier Game'.round)

(Fig.'The Bezier Game'.car)

This game can be used for tutorials games to learn how the pen work.

Week 2 :This week, Mr.Hafiz asked us to make a little monster with pictures.

These are the graphics provided by Mr.Hafiz.

When designing it, I wanted to create a cuter little monster, and I first went to the Internet to find some cuter characters to stimulate my inspiration.

Here are some of my inspirations:

(Fig.inspiration.1)

(Fig.inspiration.2)

(Fig.inspiration.3)

I designed a cow for the head.

(Fig.head)

I used many patterns to pile up the face to imitate the plush feeling of the animal. He also added a long ear hanging down to make it look even cuter.

(Fig.face)

Here is the full picture:

(Fig.fanal product)

Week 3 :This week, Mr.Hafiz taught us to make the Adidas logo.
First find an Adidas icon, and then draw three equal proportion circles on the icon, delete the extra part, make three leaves, and then draw three equal proportion strips, Adidas icon is completed.

The following is my finished product.

Week 4 :Mr.Hafiz taught us how to make a tail this week.
Go to ‘adobe colour’ first and pick up the color you like.

And then make the tail shape.

Add color to the tail, then make a shadow surface, and the tail is finished.

'The Show'Mural Competition

On October 6, I participated in the design competition of the school. The content of our group painting was world peace. On the far left were the famous buildings of many countries, in the middle were the national flags of many countries, on the right was a rainbow representing friendship, and the theme object was a dove representing peace.
