Task 2 :Typographic Exploration and Communication

LECTURE

Week 6 :Typo_6_Screen&Print

In the past, printing was considered alive only when it appeared on paper, but now typography exists more on the screen. Typesetting is done in the browser.

(Fig.1.10.Typesetting)

  • Print Type Vs Screen Type
Type for Print :
Fonts were designed to be read from a very early time.
Caslon, Garamond, and Baskerville are the most commonly used typography. Because they are elegant, intelligent and easy to read.

(Fig.1.11.Type for print)

Type for Screen :
Fonts on the web can be optimized to enhance the readability and performance of the on-screen environment.
Factors such as smaller fonts and more open spacing can improve character recognition and readability in non-print environments.

Hyperlinks, which take you to another website, are very common and can be seen on almost all web pages. The text is usually blue with an underscore underneath the font.

Each device has its own selection of pre-installed fonts, windows devices may only have one category, and Mac OS comes from another group. Google and Android both use their own.

  • Static Vs Motion
Static Typography :
Static typography has traditional characteristics in the expression of text, which can only provide a small part of the expression potential, and the impression it leaves on people is closely related to people's emotions.

Motion Typography :
Motion typography makes fonts fluid and adds drama to them.
This type of typography is often overlaid on music videos and advertisements to better capture the mood of the audience.

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK

I started making layouts.
I first watched Mr.Vinod's teaching video, and then made it with the text given by the teacher. This is my production process.

Fig.2.1.Production process(28/10/2024)

I first used ‘Illustrator’  to make the title, and then imported‘ indesign’ to combine the title with the text.

Here are five typesetting methods I made.

FEEDBACK

Week 6 :
  • General feedback : Ms. Vitiyaa continued to help us adjust the layout practice.
  • Specific feedback :Ms. Vitiyaa first asked us to print out the six layouts, and then she helped us read them one by one. Ms. Vitiyaa told me that the picture and the title should be aligned with the text, and I changed it under her guidance.

Week 7 :
  • General feedback : Ms. Vitiyaa  helped us revise the layout homework we finished last week.
  • Specific feedback : Ms. Vitiyaa gave me a lot of advice on my homework. I should pay attention to the kerning and line spacing. I didn't segment the article at the beginning, and the article was all piled together, which was very ugly.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
Compared with Task 1, during the practice of task 2, I can obviously use "Illustrator" and "in design" more skillfully, have a deeper understanding of typography, and gradually understand the golden ratio.

Observation
I have observed that it is necessary to understand the content of the article before making a text typesetting, so that the content of the article can be more fully reflected in the typesetting.

Findings
I found that kerning and line spacing are very important to the cleanliness of a typesetting. When the kerning and line spacing are too close or too far away, the whole typesetting will look messy. Only appropriate kerning and line spacing can make the whole typesetting look neat and clean.

FURTHER READING

Fig.3.Typographic Design: Form and Communication

《Typographic Design: Form and Communication》 is a book I read this week. I think it is very good. It is a systematic and comprehensive textbook of typographic design, which deeply discusses all aspects of typographic design. From history and theory to practical application, and then to modern typography technology, it provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of the framework, is a valuable resource for learning typography design.
