Culture & Design
Visuals are...
1)Everything that can be seen.
2)Everything produced or created by humans that can be seen.
Designers need to be aware of cultural nuances, symbolism, and context
to create designs that are inclusive and resonate with diverse
audiences.
- Design significance
- Design Sensitivity
Symbolism and Imagery
Certain symbols and images may have different meanings in different
cultures. Designers should be aware of potential cultural interpretations
to avoid unintentional misunderstandings or offense.
Typography and Language
It is important to choose fonts and text styles that are culturally
appropriate. Additionally, considering language differences and ensuring
accurate translations are essential to reaching different audiences.
Color Considerations
Colors can have cultural significance, and their meanings can vary from
society to society. Understanding the cultural associations of colors can
help designers make appropriate choices.
Inclusive design
Designers should strive to create products and experiences that are
appropriate and inclusive for people from all cultures, including those with
different abilities and needs.
localization
Adapting a design to a specific cultural context through localization can
increase the relevance and acceptance of a product or service.
User Research
Conducting comprehensive user research, including ethnography and user
testing with different groups, helps designers gain insight into cultural
preferences and behaviors.
Cultural awareness training
Design teams may benefit from cultural awareness training to gain a deeper
understanding of different perspectives and sensitivities.
TASK
Task 1 - Proposal
First, we formed a group of 6 people, and then we needed to come up with
a proposal based on the selected country/culture.
Group members :
- Group Leader: Liu Xin Yi(0372010)
- Cindy Tan Kai Ling(0367713)
- Lou Yu Han(0375593)
- Sun Yu Tong(0377440)
- Gu Jia Yun(0378994)
- Shi Man Lin(0375858)
Because the designed items should be closely related to daily life, our group decided to make cultural designs related to pillows after discussion. Pillows are indispensable items in our lives and we need to use them every day.
2)Further exploration
We decided to make three types of pillows: porcelain pillows, lantern
pillows, and herbal pillows. We then collected materials online.
Below are the pictures :
They are Porcelain pillow,
Herbal pillow,
lantern pillow.
3)Ideas and sketches
Design concept: Combine the jade pillow with modern ergonomics to create a
design suitable for modern sleep.
Design concept: The design is inspired by the Linglong pillow, a
traditional pillow with six hollow sides, which can reduce the pressure on
the ears when lying on the side and improve comfort. At the same time, the
shape of the lantern is used as the key element of the design, symbolizing
reunion and harmony.
Herbal pillow
Design Concept: Inspired by ancient Chinese traditions, this cushioned herbal pillow turns sleep into a rejuvenating experience.

- Task 1 Reflection
I think the initial exploration and discussion was quite difficult. We
actually struggled for a long time when discussing what items to design,
because the items had to be closely related to life, create something new, and
be integrated with culture.
After many overturned and rebuilt ideas, we decided to design pillows. Because
pillows are very daily in our opinion, and they can also have many new ideas
in shape.
In this task, our imaginations were opened up and we thought of many
interesting items. This task gave me a new feeling about design. In fact, I
quite like this task, because it is the first time I design something by
myself. I think it is novel and fun, and I can incorporate all the elements I
can think of into it.
Task 2 - Data collection and observation
We mainly used the following two research methods :
1) Field trip
We went to many stores that sold pillows and herbs.
Here is the video :
Here are some of the pictures we took :
2)Google Form Survey
We shared the Google Forum survey link on the public platform.
Here are the results of the survey :
After collecting the data, we gathered together to organize the data.
Below is the video we shot while collecting data :

In this task, I also learned more about pillows. It turns out that pillows
of different hardness and shapes have different uses for human health. In
this data survey, we thought of adding traditional Chinese herbs to pillows,
and I realized that this practice is so beneficial to our body.
This task is really interesting and fun. Going out to collect data together
can also promote the relationship between people.
In addition, when we were collecting data, we found that many people were
interested in adding herbs to pillows. It seems that everyone is now
focusing on health preservation, which makes us more confident and creative
in our design. Passion.

I think this study is difficult and interesting. It is difficult because it
is a short semester, the time is very tight, and there are many tasks to be
completed. The fun part is that it is a team project. Everyone helps each
other when creating, which makes it easier to get inspiration and make
friends. I also learned a lot from my group members. In the study of
cross-cultural design, I also gained more knowledge and learned how to
integrate culture into the designs we see every day and the impact it can
bring.
In this project, I explored how to integrate Chinese culture and design into
"Everyday Design". As a Chinese, I am very proud to integrate my country's
culture into design. In the observation, analysis, and data collection, my
understanding of Chinese culture has also deepened. Before studying this
module, I didn't know that the forms of Chinese pillows could be so diverse,
and even after adding traditional Chinese herbs, they can bring benefits to
the body. This made me understand that pillows have many values besides
sleeping comfort.
I did a lot of thinking in this group project. I had a lot of
fun during this period. I saw the daily pillow styles and many uncommon
pillow styles. In addition, doing the Google Form survey also made me
realize that many people from other countries are also interested in Chinese
culture, which made me very happy and more motivated.
In short, I have learned a lot in the past seven weeks. It made me
understand that even the most daily items have been added with the
designer's strong efforts and creative passion. I began to pay more
attention to the things around me and realized that every item has its own
mission and meaning.
