LECTURE
WEEK 5 :LECTURE 4
- HARMONY
1. Harmony involves the selection of elements that share a common trait.
2. Harmony becomes monotony without variety.
3. Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit
together. They may fit the same theme, aesthetic style or mood.
- UNITY
1. Unity refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout your
design — whether they’re colors, shapes or materials — to pull the look
together.
2. Unity occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they are
balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme.
3. Although unity and harmony may sound similar, they each play distinct
roles in the way we experience design.
- SCALE AND PROPORTION
1. Scale and proportion are both design elements that have to do with size.
2. Scale is the size of one object in relation to the other objects in a
design or artwork.
3. Proportion refers to the size of the parts of an object in relationship
to other parts of the same object.
4. Throughout the centuries, designers have used scale and proportion to
depict or distract from the ideal.
- SCALE
1. Scale refers to the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to a
specific unit of measure.
2. Scale can be determined in two ways:
(1)Actual measurement
(2)Visual estimates based on comparison
- SCALE(cont’d)
1. Architectural drawings and scale models are examples of the applied use
of scale.
2. Also, scale is used to specify or illustrate details based on the
relative sizes of objects.
3. Substantial deviation from a normal scale relationship can create
dramatic results and visual interest within the design or composition.
- PROPORTION
1. Proportion in art and design is the relationship of two or more elements
in a composition and how they compare to one another with respect to size,
color, quantity, degree, setting, etc.; i.e. ratio.
2. Proportion is said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exists
between the elements with respect to size or quantity.
3. The effective use of proportion in design often results in harmony and
unity.
WEEK 6 :LECTURE 5
- SYMBOL
Symbols can convey information in design and can be divided into three
categories: graphic symbols, abstract symbols, and arbitrary symbols.
Pictorial symbols
They can simplify the pictures associated with the image.
Abstract symbols
They can express what they want to express, but with less details.
Arbitrary symbols
They have no similarities with the object they want to express, and need to
be understood before they know what they want to express.
- WORD & IMAGE
2. Fonts have their own advantages as a communication tool if used
appropriately and arranged strategically.
3. Words and images are completely different communication tools because
they communicate with the audience in different forms. They can exist
independently in the design.
- Phase 1: Observation
- Phase 2: Analysis
1. Think about your observations and make statements about the artwork based
on the observations.
2. Talk about design principles and the impact on the viewer.
3. Talk about how our eyes work throughout the work.
- Phase 3: Interpretation
1. Summarize observations and analysis and relate them to facts about the
artwork/designer and historical context.
2. What is design and its purpose?
TASK
Idea my proposed in Task 2:
My progress:
I modified the poster according to Mr. Fauzi's suggestion, dimming the
brightness of the entire image, and then selecting four areas to brighten. The
brightness effect is gradually reduced, the center is the brightest, and the
darker it is as you go out. I finally brightened the center, but I found that
if I did that, the visual center of the whole picture would move down, so I
also adjusted the brightness of the area slightly above, which is more
coordinated. In addition, I changed the color of the text to be more
eye-catching.
Then I thought that if I put the text together, the visual center of the image
would be too far to the left, so I un-brightened one spot on the right and put
half of the text on the right.
Then I changed the shape of the text.
But Mr. Fauzi said that the version I made without the font change was better,
so I decided to use this version as my final assignment.
Final digital artwork:
<SHI MANLIN_"Bal du moulin de la Galette"_Final Task 3>
200 Words Rationale:
When modifying this painting, I chose to darken the surrounding characters to
highlight the individual characters, because I think this can highlight the
subject, so that the characters can find the center point at a glance and
understand the most important part of the painting. I also chose a striking
yellow as the title instead of a color similar to the color of the painting,
because I think this can attract people's attention more and quickly know what
the painting wants to express.
- Decisions made in my design
2)Originally I wanted to brighten just the middle figure, but I found that
the image would become a bit flat if I did that, so I added a brighter figure
on each side.
- Meaning/purpose of the design
- Design Principles used to create the design
In order to ensure the balance of the picture, I divided the text into two
parts to make the picture more harmonious.
Contrast
To emphasize the central character, I darkened the colors of the other
characters.
Harmony & Unity
In order to make the picture look more comfortable and beautiful, I also
brightened the two places at the back.
Word and Image
I added text to this piece, using a brighter yellow to make it more
eye-catching.
FEEDBACK
Week 5
Mr. Fauzi taught me how to modify this work using Photoshop, and I learned a
lot.
Week 6
Mr. Fauzi selected the final product for me and pointed out the problems I
had with other products.
Week 7
Mr. Fauzi checked my blog and I improved it.
REFLECTION
This module taught me how to apply design principles in practice. It taught me
the importance of balance and emphasis in layout composition. It also taught
me to use bright colors when writing text so that people can see it at a
glance.
