Experience
My experience in Advanced Typography was a mix of challenge, exploration, and growth. Compared to the previous Typography module, this one felt more open and experimental, which gave me the freedom to explore areas I truly enjoy, especially type design. At first, I found Typography quite rigid and overwhelming, but through this module, I discovered a new appreciation for it. The tasks—ranging from layout systems and historical studies to constructing my own font—pushed me beyond my comfort zone and deepened my interest. Although I didn’t take the typography class offered by the school, this project gave me the opportunity to approach the subject independently and creatively. I particularly enjoyed the type design portions, which felt more intuitive to me than layout design, and I now feel more confident in applying these skills across other design areas.
Observations
One key thing I observed was how much longer I took when working on layouts compared to type design. While I enjoy ideating and sketching letterforms, layout tasks—especially those involving typographic systems—often took more time and energy. I sometimes found it difficult to visualize how my designs would translate into applications like posters or collateral, and that led to moments of self-doubt or burnout. However, getting feedback from friends and lecturers was incredibly helpful in those situations. I also realized how crucial resilience is in the design process—there were moments where I felt creatively drained, but the freedom and excitement of the project kept me going.
Findings
Through this module, I gained valuable insights into both creative and practical aspects of typography. I learned that the design process is rarely linear—it involves a lot of trial and error. While some ideas didn’t work out as planned, each failure helped me refine my thinking and design sensibility. The experimental tasks enhanced my creativity, while design theory gave me a foundation to guide those experiments. I also developed a better understanding of branding and application—how typography functions not just in isolation but as part of a larger identity. Lastly, I discovered how painstaking kerning can be—it’s such a small detail but makes a huge impact on the final output. Typography is truly a craft of precision, and despite its challenges, I’m now more inspired to continue developing a typeface that solves real-world design problems in the future.
