TASK
VSP25 Final Project Proposal :
Shooting and behind-the-scenes production
The filming of this film was all completed in school. In order to obtain a
relatively quiet and undisturbed shooting environment, we deliberately
found a corner with few people to arrange and frame.
Although the space is limited, we try our best to create the
depressing atmosphere required for the film through angle selection and
setting techniques.
Since the team only has two people, the shooting process is full of
challenges. In addition to lighting and composition, we also need to take
turns to perform and shoot, resulting in some shots that need to be
retaken multiple times, especially scenes involving two people's
interaction. In these shots, we repeatedly adjusted the position and
rhythm, just to accurately convey the subtle emotional changes between the
characters, to ensure that the plot is natural and smooth, and the
emotions are real and moving.
Through continuous attempts and running-in, we gradually found the right
shooting rhythm, and also accumulated more on-site adaptability during the
actual shooting process. Although the process was difficult, we are very
satisfied with the presentation of the film.
Special effects and visual effects production
After the shooting was completed, we entered the post-production stage of
special effects. The main special effects of this project include:
wall-penetrating special effects, information pop-up, time freeze, mirror
mapping and other key visual performances. The appearance of these special
effects adds a sense of surreality and psychological symbolism to the
whole story.
We mainly use Adobe After Effects to achieve these effects. In order to
achieve the visual experience of "going through the wall", we refer to
multiple teaching videos and combine techniques such as masking, tracking
and keyframe animation to make the picture transition natural and in line
with physical logic. The "time freeze" special effect freezes part of the
picture and superimposes slight environmental dynamics to create a feeling
that time is paused but emotions are still flowing; "mirror" symbolizes
the character's self-examination, and we enhance its psychological
symbolism by reversing the video and adjusting the transparency.
In addition, in the information pop-up scene, we present the information
in a dynamic layer fade-in and fade-out way, simulating the pop-up
reminder on the mobile phone, so that the audience can more easily replace
the source of the character's inner pressure.
Color grading and atmosphere rendering
After the editing is completed, we uniformly color the entire film.
Because the iPhone was used for shooting this time, some pictures are
overexposed, especially when the natural light is strong indoors, the
color level is easily lost. To solve this problem, Sun Yutong made
multiple color grading and light and dark contrast adjustments to restore
the texture and layering of the picture.
The film's color strategy is divided into two stages: the first half uses
colder tones such as gray-blue and dark green to highlight the
protagonist's inner anxiety and depression; in the second half, as the
character "awakens" and releases emotions, the colors gradually change to
warm orange-brown and beige, symbolizing psychological healing and
rebirth.
This color contrast not only serves the narrative rhythm, but also
enhances the visual emotional communication. In addition, we reduced
saturation, deepened shadows, and unified color temperature to make the
overall picture style more cinematic and full of emotional tension.
Inserting music and sound effects
In the post-production stage of the video, I mainly searched and
downloaded a variety of high-quality sound effects materials through the
Pixabay platform, including background music, environmental sounds,
action sounds, and electronic sound effects. In order to make the sound
and the picture perfectly match, I took the time to carefully select
each sound effect to ensure that they can accurately set off the
atmosphere of the picture and enhance the audience's immersion.
Afterwards, Sun Yutong dubbed and recorded some clips of her speaking in
the video and added an "ethereal" effect. This effect makes the sound
have a mysterious and ethereal feeling, which perfectly fits the
psychological state of the characters in the video and the atmosphere of
the story.
Final Outcome Of Video:
FEEDBACK
Week 11
Mr. Martin said that there were some problems with our storyline and
it would be incomprehensible.
Week 13
After we finished filming, we showed the first draft to Mr. Martin and
he said it was OK.
Week 14:
We showed the complete video to Mr. Martin and he said there was no
problem and it was very good.
REFLECTIONS
Experience
This shooting experience was both challenging and rewarding.
Since there were only two people in the team, we had to
personally complete all aspects from directing, acting to
lighting, composition and post-production. Shooting in the
limited space of the school, we had to create a depressing
atmosphere that matched the theme of the film as much as
possible under limited conditions. We repeatedly shot and
adjusted many of the two-person interaction shots, just to
more accurately convey the subtle changes in the character's
emotions. Although the process was cumbersome, we still
insisted on polishing every frame of the shot. In constant
attempts and cooperation, we gradually found the rhythm of
shooting and improved our ability to respond and collaborate
on the spot. This experience greatly exercised our
comprehensive abilities and gave us a deeper understanding of
film and television narratives.
Observation
During the shooting and post-production process, we gradually
realized that visual language - such as lens angles, lighting
selection and color style - has a great impact on the creation
of the atmosphere of the picture. We found that even a slight
adjustment of the angle or a change in the intensity of the
light will directly affect the effect of conveying emotions.
In special effects processing, shots such as "time stillness"
and "mirror reflection" not only enhance the visual tension of
the story, but also deepen the psychological level of the
character's heart. In addition, we also observed that color
grading is crucial to the promotion of emotional rhythm, which
can guide the audience to visually perceive the changes in the
character's psychology.
Discovery
This project made us realize that details often contain great
power - whether it is a silent performance, a low-saturation
color, or a special effect processing with strong symbolic
meaning. We found that technical tools (such as After Effects)
are not only used to create "cool" pictures, but also a
language to convey emotional and psychological changes. For
example, "time pause" symbolizes the stagnation and collapse
of the heart, while "mirror" represents the character's
introspection and awakening. In addition, we also found that
even if you only use a mobile phone to shoot, as long as the
composition is attentive and the post-production is in place,
you can also present a cinematic effect. Most importantly, we
learned the meaning of "rhythm" and "white space". Sometimes,
a proper pause is both a breath for the character and a
self-dialogue for the creator.
