TASK

Uncle Jeff Kombucha Label Redesign

I chose the Uncle Jeff Kombucha ‘kelulut jun tea’ flavor, and here’s its original design:

My design concept is to combine tradition and modernity. Honey symbolizes nature and purity, while vintage patterns represent local culture. The fusion of these two elements aims to create a visually appealing effect that is both culturally rich and aesthetically pleasing.

In terms of color, I envisioned using the golden hues of honey paired with the darker tones commonly found in vintage patterns to create a warm and textured overall atmosphere. This color scheme not only reflects the natural sweetness of honey but also echoes the gentle and delicate nature of Malaysian culture. The pattern design is inspired by geometric patterns, giving new life to traditional elements and presenting a perfect fusion of nature and culture.

Sketch :
My idea was to use a retro pattern as the border and design a honey pattern in the center. This would give the overall design a traditional feel while highlighting the natural quality of the honey. The retro pattern symbolizes exquisite craftsmanship and cultural heritage, while the honey element in the center evokes sweetness and naturalness. The overall design style is warm and comfortable, using a combination of gold and milky white, making the packaging both simple and charming with a retro appeal.

FEEDBACK

Week 6

Mr. Shamsul continued briefing us about label design preparation, focusing on how to properly set up the dieline and measurement system in Illustrator. He reminded us that all elements such as the barcode, nutrition facts, and mandatory text should follow actual packaging standards. He also emphasized the importance of leaving enough bleed and margin space so that no important design elements are cut off during printing. Sir highlighted that the layout should remain organized, with clear alignment and consistent spacing to maintain good visual hierarchy.

Week 7

In this week’s session, Mr. Shamsul explained more about how to finalize the label and prepare it for mockup presentation. He demonstrated how to apply textures and gradients to add depth and realism to the label using Illustrator’s “Appearance” function. He also reminded us to use correct color settings for CMYK printing and to test the design on a bottle mockup PSD file before submission to ensure proper alignment and readability.

REFLECTIONS

Experience:
Working on the Kelulut Jun Tea label redesign for Uncle Jeff Kombucha was a rewarding process that allowed me to explore how traditional culture and natural ingredients can be translated into modern packaging. Through this project, I learned to manage technical details such as dieline setup, bleed, and CMYK color accuracy, while also experimenting with layout composition and balance. It was enjoyable to see how a concept that started from sketches gradually evolved into a professional mockup through Illustrator.

Observations:
During my design development, I realized that the original Uncle Jeff Kombucha label lacked a strong identity—it didn’t communicate much about the flavour or its natural qualities. The text hierarchy was inconsistent, and some sections felt visually heavy. In contrast, by integrating geometric vintage motifs and honey-inspired tones, I was able to highlight the product’s purity and local essence. This process taught me that good design is not only about visuals but also about storytelling and brand communication.

Findings:
This project deepened my understanding of how visual hierarchy, typography, and color psychology influence consumer perception. I learned that even small design adjustments—like increasing contrast, aligning CTAs, or balancing negative space—can significantly improve clarity and professionalism. Through refining the Kelulut Jun Tea label, I developed a stronger awareness of how packaging can reflect both cultural values and brand authenticity. Ultimately, this experience enhanced my confidence in designing for real-world commercial applications while maintaining creativity and purpose.
