Exercise 01: Text formatting
Experience
This project gave me the opportunity to develop Between Seasons from an initial concept into a complete publication. I began by exploring the relationship between seasonal changes and personal emotions, then translated these ideas into visual elements through photography, typography, and layout design. Throughout the process, I experimented with different compositions and page arrangements to create a calm and reflective reading experience.
As the project progressed, I focused on refining the visual consistency of the book, including the connection between images, text, and page transitions. In the final stage, I prepared the physical book, reviewed the printed outcome, and created a promotional video to present the atmosphere and concept of the publication in a digital format.
Observation
During the development of the book, I observed that storytelling in publication design does not always rely on a large amount of information. The combination of images, empty space, typography, and pacing can also communicate feelings and ideas. For Between Seasons, maintaining a quiet and balanced visual rhythm was important because the book focuses on subtle changes rather than dramatic moments.
I also realised that the physical form of a book influences how the audience experiences the work. The choice of paper, printing quality, and how each page is presented can affect the mood created by the design. This reminded me that publication design needs to consider both visual concepts and physical interaction.
Findings
Through this project, I learned that a successful publication requires a strong connection between concept and visual execution. Every design choice, from image selection to layout structure, should support the message that the book wants to communicate.
This project also improved my understanding of how to express abstract ideas through visual design. By combining photography, typography, and motion presentation, I learned how different media can work together to extend the experience of a publication beyond the printed pages.
